thank you, brittany, for acknowledging that you were talking out of your ass when discussing the people passionate about animal welfare/rights. it is 100% NOT a red flag or questionable if someone were to be very passionate about, for example, the newborn seals being bludgeoned with spiked clubs in the arctic. if you or anyone really was faced with that level of violence and cruelty against a defenseless creature, you too would feel compelled to rail against such barbarism. no one in their right mind could view the footage and photo evidence of that specific practice and come away from it NOT enraged and passionate about ending it. to feel nothing and say nothing after witnessing such heinous cruelty would be psychotic. please recognize and interrogate your own prejudice against those that care about and speak for the welfare of the voiceless and vulnerable (the animals), because if you’re feeling so defensive about vegans or animal rights activists- perhaps that indicative of your own unwillingness to acknowledge the harm you perpetuate. your point of “why are you so concerned with animals and not people” is unfounded and purposefully ignorant because people can have empathy and concern for many issues whilst only making one at a time their main mission. imagine if you accused Malala Yousafzi of being a “red flag” bc she uses her platform to advocate for girls’ access to education and did not speak about children in foster care as much. that would be insane. people choose their main mission and that doesn’t mean they don’t care about other things, it’s just that you cannot be effective in advocacy of anything if you spread yourself too thin and try to be both an expert and an advocate for everything. there are copious causes and crisis’ and crimes against humanity in the world, one cannot post equally about all of them whilst remaining effective in their activism. think about this: maybe you instinctively become defensive about animal issues because you’re the oppressor and benefit from the oppression of that vulnerable community and to acknowledge that would mean you would have to change your behaviors and lifestyle…but you don’t want to do that, therefore it’s easier to deny and belittle that particular liberation movement. consider that. i care deeply and speak in advocacy for all exploited, abused, downtrodden, and oppressed populations (e.i. women (particularly of color), minority communities of color that face discrimination daily by the systems in place by the dominant caste and culture where they live, those in Gaza/Palestine being bombed in their tents at night, AND animals being slaughtered by the millions every day). you’re compassion should not be so selective and discriminatory.
